Dirty Electricity

“Dirty Electricity” can be used to describe electric power that has become corrupted by our use of modern appliances. Items such as CFL (compact florescent light) bulbs, cellphone transmission antennas, power supplies for portable computers, cell phone chargers, dimmer switches, variable speed fans and many other electronic devises that require a transformer to convert the voltage will “dirty” the electricity that enters our homes and workplaces. This form of dirty electro-magnetic field (EMF), is invisible to the eye, but has a biological effect on the human body and is associated with a wide variety of illnesses.

Based on research it is estimated that as much as 50% of the population may be hypersensitive to dirty electricity. Children may be more sensitive than adults and dirty electricity in schools may be interfering with education and possibly contributing to disruptive behavior associated with Attention Deficit Disorder (ADD); dirty electricity may elevate plasma glucose levels among diabetics, and exacerbate symptoms for those with multiple sclerosis and tinnitus. When special filters to reduce the dirty electricity were installed in homes and schools, symptoms such as chronic fatigue, depression, headaches, body aches and pains, ringing in the ears, dizziness, diabetes, impaired sleep, memory loss, and confusion were reduced.

There are filters that are used to reduce the high frequency transients or "dirty electricity" that filter the power coming from the utility into the building. These are expensive and need to be put on before the electrical panel. There are also inexpensive plug-in filters that are specifically designed to filter frequency range of 4 to 100 KHz(thousand cycles per second). This is the frequency range that Russian research revealed to be particularly harmful.

These filters can reduce the dirty electricity, however we recommend checking AC magnetic fields in the environment whenever installing these. If there happens to be a wiring error that creates improper currents on circuits within the building there may be significant AC magnetic fields that are made worse with these filters. There is also an issue of not installing enough. If they are put in one area of a building it may reduce the dirty electricity in that area, but make it worse in the area where there is a lack of filters. The filters are often not able to reduce the dirty electricity to recommended levels when there are strong sources that are internally generating dirty electricity such as the compact florescent bulbs, dimmer switches and certain fan motors and purifiers on HVAC systems. The first step, is use lighting that does not create noise in the circuits by replacing dimmer switches and using AC LED bulbs or incandescent bulbs.

Intentional Environment tests for dirty electricity and the strength of the electric fields. The filters can help to improve environments where people spend their day hours. However, there are nuances to the correct placement of these filters as not to cause other electromagnetic issues. Therefore, we recommend a specialist install the filters.

The best option for sleeping environments is to eliminate the electric fields radiating from the building wiring as completely as possible. Instead of just filtering some of the high frequency radiation from the AC electric fields, we determine which circuits in the home create voltage through the clients body in the bedroom and help make it convenient to have these circuits de-energized at night. This leaves the client without the alternating current moving through their body from the complete electric field. They can then return to a quiet, earth resonance that supports the deepest stages of sleep and rejuvenation.

Below is a lecture series given by Dr. Magda Havas an Associate Professor of Environmental & Resource Studies at Trent University where she teaches and does research on the biological effects of environmental contaminants. She is one of the leading researchers on dirty electricity.

Compact Fluorescent Light Bulbs (CFLs)

The light bulb issue is a serious one. Most CFLs are full of toxic mercury vapor that are a major hazard if broken, and in many cases are not being recycled responsibly and are ending up in the landfills. This has the potential to allow the mercury to pollute the underground water table. This is not a "green" solution. The other issue of dirty electricity produced by the CFLs is concerning because the incandescent bulbs are going to be banned in a number of countries in the coming years, leaving the CFL as the only widely affordable option. In 2012 Canada plans to no longer make these available to the public.

LED bulbs do not have the mercury issue, however most of them also create dirty electricity. There are LED bulbs that run directly on AC power and do not convert the voltage to DC. These are the best alternative, however very few manufacturers are making these and the light quality is not as high as the best DC LED bulbs on the market. There needs to be more awareness about this issue so that we not only create a demand that will drive the price down to make these more affordable, but also so health conscious products are created.

Below is a video series produced in Canada that discusses this issue:
